Birthin' those babies

The arrival of my grandson Harold Kress Gillespie Martin has provoked a memory of the arrival of my son Eric Blaine Martin.  Eric appeared to be dark-skinned at birth, although he has since developed from a freckle-faced child to a totally pale-faced adult who has experienced some terrific sunburns during his lifetime. In one case, after long, hard weeks at work, he had joined friends for a camp-out on Wenatchee River. He doused himself with sun screen and promptly passed out on the beach. He awakened when he smelled the bacon burning. Somebody pointed out that his bottle of sun screen had long since expired, and the blisters and subsequent infection did require medical  intervention.  But upon  seeing his first born grandson for the first time, and reflecting on Eric's native American Indian ancestry on his father's side, Vake the Elder said, "He's got a lot of war whoop in him, doesn't he?"
