Jon Logan Sampson


Dec. 15, 2018 — Jon Logan Sampson Lt. Colonel USA (ret.), 78, died Nov. 30, 2018, at Walter Reed Riverside Hospital.
He was born in Coos Bay and was proud of his maternal family history of being Oregon pioneers who crossed the plains in the 1880s.
He was equally proud of his paternal Finnish heritage. His formative years were spent in Florence. Jon grew up there fishing, hunting and playing football at Siuslaw High School. After high school, he attended the University of Oregon, class of 1962, and upon graduating joined the U.S. Army, where he served for 20 years.
Jon was a Vietnam veteran, serving two tours and earning his Combat Infantry Badge. his awards included the Army Commendation medal, two Bronze Stars for meritorious service, and the Legion of Merit.
Jon loved camping, sailing with friends, Maine vacations, driving to Florida each winter to watch the Super Bowl with his best friend, organic gardening, his old white Chevy pick-up truck, and in his more active years cutting, splitting and stacking wood.
He also loved his volunteer work at Hands Across Mathews.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; his brother Dean and sister-in-law Patricia Sampson of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Ore.; his sister Patty Sampson of Redmond, Ore.; nephews Greg Sampson and Marq de Soncoeur of Seattle; Rusty Libby (and family) of Florence; Jeff Libby of Florence; his neice Becky (and family) of Redmond, Ore.; and one spoiled and beloved dog, Bella.
Visitation was held at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home Mathews on Dec. 10. Services were held that day, also at Foster-Faulkner.
