It's the season for huckleberries to be ripe. When we were kids on the Oregon coast, we found them to be plentiful on shrubs with thick, glossy leaves. I picked as many as I could for us to make pies. Then, a friend of a friend, Jane Van Orden who lived next door to our family friends the Stoners in Eugene, told me that she would pay me $.50 per quart for some berries. I accumulated about five quarters in our refrigerator, and got them to her. There must have been some misunderstanding. She sent me only a thank you note.
