Sue: You recounted saying a short phrase that made no sense as part of the Christmas program. I remember this: my phrase was memorized and kids in each age group had practiced marching across the stage from one side to the next, stopping in the center to deliver our two lines before proceeding. I was terrified. You and Patty were in an older group, and I was with kids my age. As we stood in line to deliver our mini-speeches, I recognized a way out. There was a little solid rail at the front of the stage, so while there were 3 or 4 kids still in front of me, I ducked down and crawled. After the person in front of me had delivered his two lines, I crawled on across behind him and popped up while the following kid was speaking. I don't think anyone noticed, and my classmates didn't "out" me.
When we got home, you told Mom (who had not attended the program) that I never gave my speech. You didn't know where I was. I hotly denied your claim. Old man Hayes came by the house a day or two later for plumbing parts or something and told mom what a good job I did in the church program. I'm sure that he confused me with cousin Patty since we both wore braids in our red hair at that time.
